Nigerian music superstar Burna Boy is this year’s winner of the Best International Act at the BET Awards.
Burna Boy, whose real name is Damini Ebunoluwa Ogulu, has won this award for the third time in a row.
The Nigerian artist was competing against his fellow countryman Wizkid and Tanzania’s Diamond Platnumz in the same category.
Other people in the category were Youssoupha and Aya Nakamura, both from France, Brazil’s Emicida, and the UK’s Headie One and Young T & Bugsey.
He was present at the ceremony and collected the award himself after he missed the opportunity in 2019.
The event was held at Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles.
Accepting the award, the 29-year-old Nigerian said, “I made it this time to collect my award myself,” he said before he taught the audience a bit of Pidgin English.
He said he was grateful to his mother, “the most beautiful woman in the world,” who went with him to the event.
Burna Boy has released three critically acclaimed albums in recent times.
He released ‘Outside’ in 2018 before his win in 2019. In 2019, he released ‘African Giant’, which saw him dominate in the award in 2020. He released his most recent album, Twice as Tall, in 2020.
During this time, Burna Boy also grabbed a Grammy win and a nomination.
Meanwhile, Diamond Platnumz said he was grateful to Tanzanians supporting him in unity despite a petition launched to have him disqualified for the US music award.
More than 20,000 people had signed the petition and wanted him disqualified for “whitewashing” the late president John Magufuli’s government.
Tanzania’s government spokesman Gerson Msigwa congratulated Diamond.
“We didn’t get the award, but we have more respect. We, as Tanzanians, know you are a winner, a fighter, a real patriot and best musician in Africa and around the world. We shall get the award another time,” he posted on
