A Life Well Lived: The Biography of Nana Kwame Ampadu

The “Obra” hitmaker kicked the bucket on Tuesday, September 28, at the Legon Hospital in Accra where he was receiving treatment for an illness, according to several media reports. He passed on aged 76.

The unexpected demise of Nana Kwame Ampadu who was affectionately called ‘King of Highlife’ came as a shock to many industry people and fans.So, on this note, GHbase.Com takes you through the life of Nana Kwame Ampadu in retrospect. Let’s take a ride from below:Nana Kwame Ampadu was born on 31 March 1945 to Samuel Kofie & Madam Mary Angamah in Adiemmra which happens to be in ObKwahu in the eastern region of Ghana.

He was nurtured in Adiemmra where his parent used to stay. He formed the “African Brothers Band” in 1963 along with Eddie Donkor and his cohort.

Nana Ampadu rose to fame after he released his single “Ebi Te Yie” somewhere in the year 1967 which led to him becoming a household name.

Historically, Nana Kwame Ampadu left behind over 800 songs: Namely, Aku Sika, Kofi Nkrabea, Obiaa Ba Nnye, Woyoo Woyoo, Mother, Mentumi Ngyae Wo, Agartha, Aye Se Ye Do Wo, Obra, Drivers, Anibere Nnye, Oman Bo Adwo, Kwaata, etc.

He was described by many as the ‘King’ of Highlife music earning him the title ‘Nana’ Kwame Ampadu.

He sadly passed on in the early hours of Tuesday, September 28, 2021, at a hospital located at East Legon. Nana Ampadu is inherited by eight children namely
