Police confirm that the driver involve in the Sawla accident was asleep at the wheel

A VIP bus carrying 45 passengers from Accra to Wa, with registration number GT 5693-16, caused a fatal accident in the Sawla-Tuna-Kalba District.

Nine people died while nine others sustained a series of injuries when the Wa-bound VIP bus got involved in the accident.

The dead were conveyed to Wa Regional Hospital pending identification. Most of the passengers alighted between Techiman and Bole, leaving 18 passengers to carry on to their final destination.

The Savannah Regional Police Command has confirmed that the accident on the Sawla Highway happened because the driver was asleep at the wheel.

Police said preliminary investigations indicate that the driver veered off road, which suggests he was sleeping as a result of fatigue.

The driver was among the injured. Asked if any charges would be leveled against the driver, the police said, “we are waiting for him to come out from the hospital and then if there are any questions to be asked”.

“He will be charged. We will charge him with negligently causing harm, dangerous driving, careless and inconsiderate driving, among others”.
