Lionel Messi made history by winning a record seventh Ballon d’Or, beating competition from stars such as Robert Lewandowski and Karim Benzema.
The Barcelona legend was handed the Golden Ball by fellow South American compatriot and friend Luis Suárez.
The former Barca captain ended the 2020 season by helping Barca win the Copa del Rey and scooping his eighth Pichichi award for being La Liga’s top scorer with 30 goals from 35 games.
He broke records by getting past Pele’s mark of most goals for one club., as did Gerd Muller’s record of scoring 30+ goals for 12 consecutive seasons. He also overtook Xavi’s record for most Barca appearances.
The award winner inspired the Argentinian national team to victory at the Copa America in Brazil, finally scooping a major honor at international level.
Polish sharpshooter,Lewandowski, picked up the striker of the year award and Messi paid him acknowledgement in his acceptance speech.
Messi said, “Tell Robert that it is very special to have reached the final with him. Everyone agreed that last year you were the winner. It couldn’t be done because of the pandemic, but I think you deserve to have this trophy at home.”
