Jose Mourinho joins Roma as head coach

Mourinho was sacked by Tottenham in April after just 17 months in charge of the Premier League club

A.S Roma has announced the appointment of Jose Mourinho as manager of the club from the start of next season.

Jose Mourinho is expected to leave TalkSport just four days after he was announced as a pundit. His contract with the three-time Serie A champions will run from 2021-22 to the 2023-24 football season.

Sharing his first words after signing, Jose Mourinho spoke in glowing terms of the fans and the Friedkin family, the club’s owners.

“The incredible passion of the Roma fans convinced me to accept the job and I cannot wait to start next season. Thank you to the Friedkin family for choosing me to lead this great club. After meetings with the ownership and Tiago Pinto, I immediately understood the full extent of their ambitions” Mourinho said.

This will be Mourinho’s seventeenth straight season in Europe’s top four leagues, and the 58year old Portuguese says his ambition is as high as ever.

“It is the same ambition and drive that has always motivated me and together we want to build a winning project,” he Mourinho.

Mourinho enjoyed a successful stint in Italy last time out, winning the Serie A title in two consecutive seasons and most notably, the UEFA Champions League in the treble-winning second season with Inter Milan.

His new club, however, has not won the Serie A they since they last won it with Fabio Capello 2000-01. However, General Manager Tiago Pinto shares some optimism concerning Mourinho’s arrival.

“We were blown away by Jose’s desire to win and his passion for the game: no matter how many trophies he has won, his primary focus is always on the next one. He possesses the knowledge, experience, and leadership to compete at all levels.

“We are supremely confident Jose will be the perfect coach for our project, for both our immediate and long-term future.”

A.S Roma is currently seventh in the Serie A with 55points after 34matches.
