American Basketball Player Brittney Griner Detained In Russia Since February

Women’s Basketball player, Brittney Griner, has been detained in Russia since February 2022 but nearly two months after her arrest, little is known about her circumstances.

The 31 year old, is said to be in a Russian jail on drug charges, after airport customs officials allegedly found cannabis oil in her luggage.

In March, a Moscow court announced it would extend Ms Griner’s detention until 19 May and if convicted and found guilty of drug charges, she could face up to 10 years in prison.

Ms Griner, widely seen as the best female basketball player of all time, will be absent when the WNBA begins its regular season in May.

She is one of the few players who have won a college championship, WNBA and EuroLeague titles and an Olympic gold medal.

She was expected to play her eighth season with the Phoenix Mercury.

Like Ms Griner, almost half of WNBA players ply their trade overseas in the WNBA off-season to augment their domestic income.

It is believed that WNBA players make more money in Russia, receiving roughly five times than they do in the United States.

Since 2015 she has played for a Russian team during the WNBA off-season.
