Israel’s offensive in Lebanon is “devastating the country,” Lebanese Economy Minister Amin Salam said.

Salam condemned Thursday’s airstrike on central Beirut, marking the first attack on that part of the city since 2006. He emphasized that Israel’s strikes are increasingly targeting civilian areas.

“This has far exceeded what happened in 2006,” Salam noted, highlighting that the recent strike occurred less than two miles from the Government Palace.

Salam expressed concern over the displacement of more than 1 million Lebanese and Syrian residents, warning that managing the crisis will be a “long-term issue” for the government, even if a ceasefire is declared.

“We have hospitals and schools overflowing with people, and many are sleeping on the streets, yet the war continues. From my perspective, this war serves no purpose. It’s simply destroying the country,” Salam said.

“We must rebuild their towns and villages. We need to create peaceful conditions for them. We’re facing a complex challenge in caring for all these displaced individuals,” the minister added.
