Bagbin to rule on petition seeking removal of four MPs

Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin is set to deliver a ruling today, Thursday, October 17, on a petition calling for the removal of four sitting Members of Parliament (MPs). The petition, brought forward by the Minority, seeks the dismissal of Agona West MP Cynthia Morrison, Suhum MP Kojo Asante, Fomena MP Andrew Asiamah, and Amenfi Central MP Peter Kwakye Ackah, for allegedly filing to contest as independent candidates in the upcoming December elections.

Peter Kwakye Ackah, one of the affected MPs, has expressed his calmness regarding the Speaker’s impending decision. In an interview, Ackah clarified that he has not officially left his party but has merely indicated his intention to run as an independent candidate in the next parliament. He explained that declaring an intention to run independently does not equate to resigning from his party, but is simply a statement about his future political plans.

Ackah further noted that any consequences of the Speaker’s ruling would be accepted, stating, “If you take any action, there should be a reaction. So you must be ready for it. Because if you say you are going independent and the Speaker rules that your seat is vacant, what can you do? You cannot challenge them because they have been imprisoned already.”

The Speaker’s decision is expected to clarify the implications of MPs declaring independence while still in office.
