The Ghana Police Service has refuted media reports alleging that activist Oliver Barker-Vormawor was beaten by officers while in custody. In a statement issued on Sunday, October 20, 2024, the police described the claims as “false and baseless,” urging the public to disregard them, asserting that Barker-Vormawor and his supporters were attempting to manipulate public sympathy.
The police emphasized that Barker-Vormawor, currently being prosecuted by the Office of the Attorney General, was granted bail by the High Court on Wednesday, October 16, 2024. The bail was set at GH¢20,000 with two sureties. However, efforts to execute the bail had failed due to the accused’s inability to meet the surety requirements.
On October 19, 2024, police intelligence suggested that Barker-Vormawor was allegedly planning to compromise the security of other inmates and the police station. When officers attempted to transfer him to another cell, Barker-Vormawor resisted. During the altercation, he sustained minor scratches on his right hand, for which he was promptly treated at a hospital and discharged.
The police reiterated their dedication to maintaining law and order while ensuring the safety of individuals in their custody, including suspects like Barker-Vormawor.
