God bless our homeland Ghana and make it great and strong – Bagbin posts on Facebook
The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has broken his silence on the ongoing controversy surrounding the Supreme Court’s ruling, which overturned his declaration of four parliamentary seats as vacant. In a Facebook post, Speaker Bagbin shared a cryptic message, stating, “God bless our homeland Ghana and make it great and strong, beyond any single individual or institution.”
This post comes after the Supreme Court directed him to suspend the implementation of his decision to declare the seats of four MPs vacant. The MPs affected by the ruling include Cynthia Morrison of Agona West, Kwadwo Asante of Suhum, Andrew Asiamah Amoako of Fomena, and Peter Kwakye Ackah of Amenfi Central. The declaration had caused considerable political and legal debate, especially on whether the Speaker had the authority to make such decisions and if the Supreme Court can override the Speaker’s ruling based on Article 97 of the 1992 Constitution.
As Parliament prepares to reconvene, Bagbin’s statement may offer a glimpse into his position amidst speculation about whether he will challenge or comply with the Court’s ruling. His concluding remark, “beyond any single individual or institution,” hints at his broader perspective on the powers of the Legislature and Judiciary in Ghana’s democracy.
