Patients to get full access to record on NHS App

The UK government is set to launch a digital transformation of the National Health Service (NHS) in England, enabling patients to access their full medical records, test results, and doctors’ letters through the NHS App. This initiative is part of a new 10-year strategy aimed at modernizing how patients interact with healthcare services, inspired by the success of digital banking apps.

Currently, the NHS App is limited, as patient records are held separately by GPs and hospitals, with not all healthcare sectors linked to the app. The government’s plan is to create a unified digital patient record that consolidates information from different local services into a single system. This shift is intended to improve efficiency, reduce errors, and speed up patient care by making medical information readily accessible to both patients and healthcare providers.

While some campaigners have expressed concerns about potential privacy risks, government officials, including Care Minister Stephen Kinnock, have pledged to uphold strict data protection measures. New legislation will be introduced to ensure robust safeguards for confidential medical information.

This digital overhaul is part of a broader strategy to reshape healthcare in England, which includes expanding neighborhood health centers where patients can receive various services such as GP care, nursing, and testing under one roof. As part of a “national conversation,” the government is inviting public input to help shape the future of the NHS.

Health Secretary Wes Streeting acknowledged the current challenges facing the NHS but expressed optimism about turning things around with public and staff contributions. Patient advocacy groups and NHS staff have also welcomed the initiative, though some stress that additional funding will be crucial for its success. Next week’s Budget announcement is expected to include further details on winter and next year’s funding for the NHS.
