Ghana Institution of Engineering calls for increased awareness to reduce road crashes

The Ghana Institution of Engineering (GhIE) has stressed the importance of educating motorists on road traffic regulations to help curb the rise in road accidents. The institution believes that better awareness of driving responsibilities can lead to more effective enforcement of regulations. This call comes in the wake of a series of road crashes, including those at East Legon, on the Accra-Kumasi Highway, and the Kumasi-Obuasi stretch.

Speaking to Citi News, GhIE President Ing. Kwabena Bempong urged the police to take proactive measures to improve road safety, particularly by reminding drivers of their obligations on the road. He emphasized the need for caution as Ghana approaches both the Christmas season and the upcoming general election, urging drivers to adopt defensive driving techniques to reduce accidents during this period.

Ing. Bempong highlighted that many accidents occur due to reckless or careless driving, especially during festive and election periods when some drivers become overly excited. He called on law enforcement to focus not just on penalizing minor offences but also on actively educating drivers to make roads safer for everyone.
