Kasoa ritual murder: Two teens found guilty after three-year trial

The High Court has found two teenagers guilty of the murder of 10-year-old Ishmael Abdallah in Kasoa, a crime that shocked the nation in 2021 due to its brutality and the involvement of minors. Nicholas Kini, who was 18 at the time of the crime, was sentenced to life in prison. The first accused, aged 15 at the time, will be sentenced by a juvenile court.

The murder occurred as part of a misguided ritual attempt to gain wealth. The first accused, influenced by a video from a spiritualist, conspired with Nicholas Kini to carry out the killing. They lured Ishmael to an uncompleted building under the pretense of giving him a video game, where they attacked and ultimately buried him alive.

The court heard testimony from seven witnesses, including the deceased’s father and family members of the accused. The sister of the first accused provided key evidence, leading to the discovery of the boy’s body. Despite Nicholas Kini’s denial, the jury unanimously found both teenagers guilty of murder and conspiracy to commit murder.

The sentencing brings closure to a heartbreaking case that has gripped the nation.
