Renewed violence has erupted in Bawku, resulting in the deaths of two individuals and injuries to several others due to a chieftaincy-related conflict. The longstanding tensions resurfaced following the return of Alhaji Seidu Abagre, a rival chief who had been in exile since his controversial installation in February 2023 in Nalerigu. His return was enabled by a Kumasi High Court ruling on October 17, 2024, which quashed an arrest warrant against him.
Upon his arrival in Bawku, tensions reignited, culminating in an exchange of gunfire on the night of October 26. The renewed conflict, following a period of relative calm, underscores the ongoing volatility and the challenges of resolving chieftaincy disputes in the region. Authorities are likely to increase security efforts to prevent further escalation and restore order.
