Bawku: It’s too early to declare state of emergency – Avoka

Member of Parliament for Zebilla, Cletus Avoka, has dismissed calls for a state of emergency in Bawku and surrounding areas, despite recent violent incidents that have heightened local tensions. The renewed conflict followed the return of a rival chief, leading to clashes and a deadly ambush on travellers, resulting in eight fatalities.

To manage the unrest, the government imposed a curfew from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. in Bawku and nearby regions on Monday, October 28. Security forces have also intensified their presence to curb further violence.

In an interview with Citi News, Avoka voiced concerns that a state of emergency would impede the freedom to campaign in the run-up to December’s elections. “A state of emergency would strip people of basic rights, limiting their ability to hold rallies, travel, or gather for meetings,” he stated.

Avoka added, “We’re nearing elections, and people need their freedoms to engage in the process. I don’t believe the situation has reached a level that requires such drastic measures.”
