John Dramani Mahama, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate, has voiced grave concerns about the recurring conflict in Bawku, which has intensified following the return of rival chief Alhaji Seidu Abagre from exile. The renewed violence has led to the loss of at least two lives, along with numerous injuries. Addressing supporters in Saboba on October 28 as part of his Northern regional campaign, Mahama urged all parties involved to exercise patience and avoid provocations that could escalate the conflict further.
Mahama emphasized the need for dialogue and peaceful resolution, pledging that, if elected, his administration would prioritize restoring peace in Bawku. He criticized the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) government, suggesting that periods of unrest often occur during their tenure and accusing them of not effectively addressing underlying tensions.
Mahama appealed directly to the people of Bawku, asking them to remain calm and avoid violence. “NDC is coming, and when we come, we will make sure that there’s peace in Bawku and surrounding areas,” he assured. He also emphasized the importance of trustworthiness in leadership, subtly suggesting that inconsistencies in the current administration’s stance could hinder progress.
