Mahama is a threat to Ghana’s Democracy – Information Minister
Ghana’s Minister for Information, Fatimatu Abubakar, has expressed strong disapproval of former President John Dramani Mahama’s recent remarks, accusing him of promoting divisive rhetoric that could potentially destabilize Ghana’s democratic institutions. Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosiisen, she asserted that Mahama’s comments, which criticize institutions like the Electoral Commission (EC), suggest an expectation that any legal ruling against him or his party is inherently flawed.
Abubakar noted that in her view, Mahama’s accusations regarding election malpractice lack evidence, and she highlighted the need for political leaders to uphold respect for independent bodies, particularly in the run-up to the 2024 general elections. Drawing a comparison, she pointed to the differing responses in recent election petitions, referencing Akufo-Addo’s acceptance of the 2012 Supreme Court decision as a model for respecting Ghana’s legal processes.
Abubakar stressed that Ghana’s democratic health relies on public trust in its institutions. “The Electoral Commission, the courts—these are institutions that we should be rallying behind to support for a fair and transparent election,” she stated. She urged Mahama and the NDC to avoid rhetoric that might damage this trust and encouraged all political parties to prioritize national unity over political gain.
