The Eastern Regional Health Directorate has confirmed its first cholera case in the Abuakwa South Municipality. The case involves a student who returned to school in Kyebi from Kasoa in the Central Region.
Dr. Winfred Ofosu, the Regional Health Director, stated that efforts are underway to trace contacts and contain the spread, with surveillance heightened across the region. Speaking with Media General’s Eastern regional correspondent, Yvonne Neequaye, on November 4, Dr. Ofosu explained that the student, showing cholera symptoms, tested positive after laboratory analysis and is receiving treatment at Kyebi Government Hospital.
Containment measures include monitoring 33 individuals who had contact with the student, and intensified community sensitization efforts. Dr. Ofosu also urged school management to provide handwashing stations, ensure kitchen staff maintain hygiene standards, serve hot food, and use safe drinking water to prevent further spread.
