President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has approved the elevation of 15 districts and municipalities, advancing the government’s decentralization agenda under the Local Government Act, 2016 (Act 936). This restructuring, requested by the Ministry of Local Government, Decentralisation, and Rural Development (MLGDRD), aims to bolster local governance and enhance administrative capacities nationwide.
The newly designated Metropolitan Assemblies include Kpone Katamanso and Techiman Municipal Assemblies, along with Gomoa East District Assembly. Additionally, 12 District Assemblies have been promoted to Municipal status:
- Bole District Assembly
- Afigya Kwabre South District Assembly
- Atwima Kwanwoma District Assembly
- Atwima Nwabiagya North District Assembly
- Obuasi East District Assembly
- Sekyere South District Assembly
- Ningo Prampram District Assembly
- Anloga District Assembly
- South Tongu District Assembly
- Shama District Assembly
- Techiman North District Assembly
- Pru East District Assembly
These changes will become effective upon completion of the necessary legal and administrative processes. Additionally, proposals to elevate Ho Municipality to Metropolitan status, and Offinso North and Birim North districts to municipalities, are under review. Various petitions for the establishment of new districts are also being evaluated.
The restructuring aligns with the government’s commitment to fostering local development and improving governance structures across Ghana.
