Election 2024: NMC welcomes formation of Ghana Fact-Checking Coalition
The National Media Commission (NMC) has expressed strong support for the formation of the Ghana Fact-Checking Coalition, a group created to combat misinformation and disinformation threats to Ghana’s peace, stability, and democratic progress. Spearheaded by organizations like the Media Foundation for West Africa, Dubawa, and FactSpace West Africa, the Coalition unites civil society organizations dedicated to promoting information integrity, especially as Ghana approaches its election period.
George Sarpong, Executive Secretary of the NMC, praised the Coalition’s creation in a statement issued on Sunday, November 10. He emphasized that this collaborative initiative is timely, given the recent increase in malign information operations from both domestic and foreign sources, which raise significant concerns about the integrity of the nation’s information space.
By pooling their resources, skills, and credibility, Sarpong noted, the Coalition strengthens Ghana’s capacity to counter disinformation and Foreign Information Manipulation and Interference (FIMI). He also encouraged all stakeholders working towards peaceful elections to collaborate with the Coalition.
As part of its commitment, the NMC will offer support through its upcoming Ghana Media Watch App, a cutting-edge tool designed to monitor and address disinformation. The app is scheduled for launch on Thursday, November 14, 2024, as part of the Commission’s broader strategy to safeguard the national information landscape during the electoral process.
