Road infrastructure projects and essential administrative roadworks in Ghana are expected to experience substantial delays due to an indefinite strike announced by workers of the Ghana Highway Authority (GHA), set to begin on November 12. The workers are protesting the government’s refusal to pause the National Roads Authority Act, 2024 (Act 1118), which they find controversial and damaging to the sector’s integrity.
Central to the strike is the workers’ call for the removal of two key officials: Ing. I.K. Mensah, Chairman of the GHA Board, and Ing. Collins B. Donkor, CEO of the National Roads Authority (NRA). They allege that these officials have supported decisions under the new Act that undermine Ghana’s road sector.
The strike follows a petition to President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, where workers demanded a halt to the Act’s implementation pending more comprehensive consultations. The GHA workers’ action highlights ongoing tensions over the management and future of Ghana’s roads and infrastructure development under the new legislation.
