Nothing will change our commitment to review Free SHS policy – Asiedu Nketia
Johnson Asiedu Nketia, Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has reiterated the party’s commitment to reviewing the Free Senior High School (FSHS) policy, aiming to address what he describes as challenges undermining the quality of education. Responding to a doctored viral video that falsely claims the NDC plans to cancel the policy, Nketia clarified that the party’s objective is not to abolish FSHS but to improve its implementation.
Nketia criticized the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for allegedly prioritizing political gains over education quality. He pointed to issues like limiting headmasters’ control over food procurement for students, a responsibility that he claims has been outsourced to contractors linked to the ruling party. This, he argued, has compromised the efficiency of the school feeding process, affecting students’ welfare.
He also highlighted the shortage of infrastructure, which he believes has led to reduced contact hours for students. Nketia attributed this to the NPP’s “rushed” approach to policy implementation, arguing that more infrastructure should have been in place before the FSHS launch. To remedy these issues, he promised that an NDC government would expand school facilities and complete abandoned E-blocks to accommodate more students.
Nketia called on the public to disregard the fake video, labeling it a tactic by the NPP to misrepresent the NDC’s intentions. He maintained that addressing the policy’s shortcomings is vital to ensure the program’s success and improve learning outcomes for Ghanaian students.
