Reprint presidential ballot without Akua Donkor’s image – Kofi Akpaloo

Kofi Akpaloo, the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG) flagbearer, has called on the Electoral Commission (EC) to reprint the presidential ballot papers for the 2024 election, citing concerns over the inclusion of the late Akua Donkor, the former Ghana Freedom Party (GFP) candidate. Akpaloo raised these concerns at a press conference on Wednesday, November 13, stressing that Akua Donkor’s image on the ballot could lead to confusion and impact the election’s outcome.

Akpaloo argued that if a new GFP candidate had been approved, the EC would have reprinted the ballots, so the same standard should apply given that the GFP is not contesting due to Akua Donkor’s passing. He emphasized that the integrity of the ballot should be upheld to avoid any potential misinterpretation by voters or disputes over the results.

“Having a ballot paper with Akua Donkor’s picture could cause confusion. People might cast votes for her, knowing she is no longer alive. It raises questions about how those votes would be counted or disregarded,” Akpaloo stated. “We don’t want a situation where a candidate might refuse to accept the results based on percentages affected by these votes. We urge the EC to reprint the ballots without Akua Donkor’s image to ensure clarity for voters.”

Akpaloo’s statement reflects growing concerns among some political figures about the transparency and accuracy of the voting process, particularly with the December election approaching.
