KUMASI, Ghana – April 29, 2025 — The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has officially commenced a high-level mediation process aimed at resolving the protracted Bawku conflict, drawing significant attention from across Ghana.
On Tuesday, the Manhyia Palace in Kumasi was under tight police and military security as dignitaries, traditional leaders, and stakeholders converged for the peace talks. The heightened security presence was a precaution to ensure the safety and smooth conduct of the sensitive negotiations.

The peace initiative comes as tensions in Bawku remain high, fueled by a decades-long chieftaincy dispute that has claimed lives and disrupted livelihoods in the Upper East Region.
Otumfuo’s intervention is widely regarded as a decisive step toward national reconciliation, with many hoping his influence and stature will help chart a path to lasting peace.

According to Sarfo Kantanka, a historian at the Manhyia Palace, security measures were non-negotiable. He stated in an interview with Citi News, “Anything involving a conflict requires a higher degree of security. No one should be told that there will be a security presence.”

Kantanka also disclosed that the mediation would adopt a hybrid format, with some discussions held in camera (private) and others open to the public, to ensure transparency while preserving confidentiality where needed.

The Bawku conflict, which has roots in ethnic and traditional leadership tensions, has defied several peace efforts. However, observers believe that Otumfuo Osei Tutu II’s involvement offers a rare opportunity for consensus-building and healing.
