Kufuor urges restraint in Supreme Court criticisms
Former President John Agyekum Kufuor has appealed for calm and respect in public discussions about Ghana’s Supreme Court, highlighting the judiciary’s pivotal role in upholding constitutional governance. His remarks come in the wake of the Supreme Court’s recent decision that deemed Speaker Alban Bagbin’s declaration of four parliamentary seats as vacant unconstitutional. The ruling has generated significant debate across political and public spheres.
Addressing the media on Sunday, November 17, Kufuor emphasized the importance of maintaining the judiciary’s integrity within the framework of checks and balances that underpin Ghana’s democracy. While acknowledging the right to critique institutional actions, he urged Ghanaians to engage in thoughtful and constructive discussions that reinforce democratic principles.
“We talk of checks and balances; some also say separation of powers, and I subscribe to the checks and balances. Even though we are in different institutions, if yours is not going well, I should be able to tell you to prevent the excesses. However, I urge caution and thoughtfulness regarding some of the criticisms being raised,” Kufuor stated.
He further underlined the supremacy of the Constitution in Ghana’s Fourth Republic, noting that the Supreme Court derives its interpretative authority from it. He stressed that judicial rulings must be respected, adding that the judiciary does not initiate cases but acts on matters brought before it.
Kufuor’s comments aim to foster a balanced perspective in national conversations, advocating for respect for the judiciary while encouraging constructive dialogue to strengthen Ghana’s democratic institutions.
