NPP Opens Nominations for 2028 Flagbearership with GH₵600,000 Entry Cost

The opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) has officially launched its nomination process for the 2028 presidential primaries, signalling the beginning of what is anticipated to be a highly competitive internal race for the party’s next flagbearer.

Announced by NPP General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong at a press briefing in Accra on Monday, July 29, the nomination process comes with a significant financial requirement: GH₵100,000 for nomination forms and GH₵500,000 as a filing fee—totalling GH₵600,000 per candidate.

“I am pleased to announce that we have officially opened nominations for our party members to become presidential candidates for the 2028 elections,” Mr. Kodua stated.

Key Dates and Timeline

  • Nomination opens: July 29, 2025
  • Nomination closes: August 28, 2025
  • Presidential primaries: January 31, 2026

The early commencement of the nomination process—more than two years ahead of the national polls—is widely seen as part of the NPP’s strategy to offer its future candidate enough time to unify the party and solidify campaign plans ahead of the 2028 general election.

Mixed Reactions to Financial Threshold

The cost of entry has stirred debate within and outside the party. While party leadership argues the fees are necessary to fund logistics and administrative processes, critics say the high financial bar risks excluding capable candidates without deep-pocketed sponsors.

Concerns have also been raised about grassroots participation, with some party members warning that such high costs could alienate potential candidates and concentrate power among the elite.

Despite the concerns, NPP insiders believe the early timeline and structured nomination process will help the party avoid the late-stage infighting that marred past campaigns and increase its chances of presenting a united and well-prepared front in the 2028 elections.
