President Akufo-Addo to Commission Flower Pot Interchange

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo will inaugurate the Flower Pot Interchange today, Tuesday, November 19. This state-of-the-art flyover is expected to significantly ease traffic congestion along the Tema Motorway corridor, improving connectivity and enhancing mobility for residents and commuters.


Key Features of the Interchange

The interchange, strategically located, boasts several modern enhancements:

  1. Dual Carriageway Viaduct:
  • An 802-meter flyover with asphaltic concrete surfacing.
  1. Ramps for Smooth Traffic Flow:
  • 140-meter ramp from Shiashie to Airport Hills.
  • 80-meter ramp connecting the viaduct to the Motorway towards Tema.
  1. Improved Connectivity:
  • A redesigned Flower Pot roundabout and its approaches.
  • A 200-meter road connecting Cantonments from Giffard Road Interchange.
  • A new road passing through the old East Legon tunnel.
  1. Pedestrian-Friendly Features:
  • Walkways on both sides of the flyover.
  • Road furniture, including streetlights, markings, and traffic signals.

Expected Benefits

  • Enhanced Connectivity: Provides seamless travel between Cantonments, Burma Camp, East Legon, Spintex, and Tema.
  • Reduced Traffic Congestion: Aimed at mitigating bottlenecks on the busy Tema Motorway.
  • Improved Quality of Life: Facilitates faster commutes and boosts productivity for residents.

  • Commencement Date: March 7, 2017.
  • Contractor: China Railway No. 5 Engineering Gh. Ltd.
  • Consultant: Deoke Consult Ltd.
  • Duration: 93 months.
  • Funding: Jointly financed by Afrexim Bank and the Government of Ghana.

The commissioning of the Flower Pot Interchange represents another milestone in the government’s commitment to infrastructure development, particularly in addressing urban transportation challenges.
