Election 2024: Political parties to sign Peace Pact today
National Peace Council to Host Peace Pact Signing Ahead of December 7 Elections
The National Peace Council (NPC) will convene a significant meeting today, Thursday, November 28, 2024, to facilitate the signing of a peace pact by all political parties and their presidential candidates contesting the upcoming December 7 general elections.
The pact aims to secure commitments from candidates to maintain peace before, during, and after the polls, reinforcing Ghana’s reputation for peaceful democratic transitions.
Optimism for Participation
Chairman of the National Peace Council, Rev. Dr. Ernest Adu-Gyamfi, expressed confidence in the participation of all political parties and their candidates.
“So far, we believe that all the parties will be there. We have commitments for all of them. We have sent them a copy of the pact for them to study if they have any comments to come back, and so far, we have not had any adverse reactions from any of the parties,” he said in an interview with Citi News.
Preparations for logistics and arrangements for the signing ceremony are reportedly underway.
Uncertainty Surrounding NDC Participation
Despite the Council’s optimism, doubts remain over the participation of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC). The party’s Chairman, Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, previously outlined six conditions for the NDC’s involvement in the peace pact.
The conditions include a demand for key government officials, such as the President, the Inspector-General of Police, the Chief Justice, the National Security Coordinator, and the Attorney General, to also sign the agreement.
As of Thursday morning, it remains uncertain whether the NDC or its representatives will attend the event.
Significance of the Peace Pact
The peace pact has become a cornerstone of Ghana’s election processes, fostering trust among political actors and the public. Past agreements have played a critical role in de-escalating political tensions and ensuring the smooth conduct of elections in the country.
Observers are keenly watching today’s event, hoping for unanimous commitment from all stakeholders to uphold peace and stability during the elections.
