North Tongu MP Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has called for an independent investigation into the Food and Drugs Authority’s (FDA) decision to extend the shelf life of 22,000 bags of rice distributed to secondary schools.
The FDA, in a recent press conference, asserted that the approval process followed global regulatory standards and best practices. However, Ablakwa has raised concerns about the potential health risks to students who consumed the rice and questioned the transparency of the process.
Call for Accountability
Speaking to Citi News, Ablakwa urged the FDA to subject itself to both local and international audits to clarify the basis of its decision.
“They [FDA] have only conducted themselves in a manner that raises more questions. And that is why an independent inquiry into this matter is crucial,” he stated.
The MP expressed dissatisfaction with the government’s response to the controversy, accusing President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo of failing to address the issue.
“It is really a shame that President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo is a leader who checked out long ago and so is taking no action,” he added.
FDA Defends Its Decision
The FDA, however, maintains that the rice was safe for consumption and that the extension adhered to scientific assessments and international safety protocols. The agency has welcomed scrutiny, stating that it is open to any investigation into its actions.
