Mahama defends proposal to restructure Free SHS administration
Mahama Proposes GES Takeover of Free SHS Management
NDC flagbearer John Dramani Mahama has proposed abolishing the Free Senior High School (Free SHS) Secretariat, citing concerns over inefficiency and corruption. In an interview with GBC on November 29, 2024, he suggested transferring the program’s management to the Ghana Education Service (GES) for better oversight and accountability.
Mahama argued that the GES, as the primary supervisor of education in Ghana, is better equipped to manage the policy, eliminating the need for a stand-alone secretariat. He also highlighted alleged corruption and waste within the current setup and emphasized his intention to streamline operations and cut unnecessary expenditures if elected President.
Under his plan, Senior High School coordinators would continue their roles but operate under GES supervision, ensuring improved governance of the Free SHS program.
