NHIA Disburses Over GH₵200 Million and Launches Free Dialysis Services
The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) has released over GH₵200 million to healthcare facilities nationwide for claims payments, coinciding with the introduction of free dialysis services under the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS). The free dialysis treatment, set to begin on December 1, 2024, aims to alleviate the financial strain on kidney patients.
Announcing the initiative, NHIA CEO Dr. Da-Costa Aboagye stated, “The NHIA has today released over GH₵200 million as claims payment to healthcare facilities nationwide as free dialysis treatment begins.”
The policy, launched by Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, builds on a pilot program earlier this year that provided free dialysis to patients under 18 and over 60 years old. Accredited health facilities across Ghana will now offer this service, ensuring equitable access for all kidney patients covered by the NHIS.
This comprehensive rollout is expected to significantly reduce financial barriers to essential dialysis treatment and improve healthcare outcomes for patients.
