Special Voting Underway Ahead of December 7 General Elections
Special Voting is currently being conducted across Ghana in preparation for the December 7 general elections. This exercise enables electoral officials, security personnel, and media representatives to cast their votes early, ensuring their availability for duties on election day.
The Electoral Commission (EC) disclosed that approximately 131,478 individuals, representing 0.007% of Ghana’s total registered voters, are expected to participate in the exercise, which is taking place in 14 of the country’s 16 regions. Voting in the Eastern and Western Regions has been postponed to December 5 due to the recall and reprinting of ballot papers following a breach of security seals.
Jean Mensa, the EC Chairperson, assured the public during an Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meeting of the transparency and credibility of the process, reiterating the Commission’s commitment to a free and fair election.
Voting began at 7:00 a.m. and will close at 5:00 p.m. Eligible voters must present valid identification at designated polling centres. However, unlike the general election, ballots cast during Special Voting will be stored securely and tallied on December 7 at Constituency Collation Centres. Results will then be incorporated into the overall election tally.
This exercise marks a crucial step in Ghana’s electoral process, ensuring seamless coordination for the main election day.
