‘No room for hooliganism’ – Kasoa police bare teeth at election thugs

The Central East Police Command, responsible for Kasoa and surrounding areas, has declared its preparedness for the 2024 general elections, pledging to clamp down on any acts of thuggery before, during, and after the polls.

Regional Commander DCOP Joseph Owusu-Bempah, speaking on behalf of the Command, revealed that they have identified suspected thugs in Kasoa and adjoining areas and are closely monitoring their activities. While the area has remained largely peaceful, the police have received complaints from both the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) about alleged plans for hooliganism.

“We are ready to contain any activity of thuggery, and anybody who tries to destabilize the election and the peace of the region will face the full rigours of the law,” he warned.

In his statement, delivered during the Central Regional Coordinating Council meeting in Cape Coast, DCOP Owusu-Bempah disclosed that 1,422 police officers had been deployed to maintain order at the 731 polling stations within the Command’s jurisdiction. Additionally, 17 rapid response teams will be on standby to address any distress calls.

Similarly, DCOP Emmanuel Teye-Cudjoe, the Central North Police Commander, affirmed his team’s readiness for the election and the upcoming Christmas season. His statement highlighted ongoing collaborations with other agencies to address potential threats, alongside community engagements to encourage the public to report suspicious activities.

Meanwhile, the Electoral Commission (EC) in the region has announced its preparedness for Saturday’s exercise. According to Deputy Regional Director Saddique Wahid, all necessary election materials and logistics have been delivered to district offices across the region.

As the December 7 election approaches, security agencies and the EC’s commitment to ensuring peace and order reflect Ghana’s continued dedication to credible and peaceful electoral processes.
