Voting ends, counting underway nationwide

Voting in Ghana’s 2024 general elections has officially concluded, with vote counting currently in progress across the country. The Electoral Commission (EC) has been proactive in updating the public through media briefings, though the day has not been without significant incidents.

Key Developments:

1. Vote Counting Underway: Electoral officials across various polling stations have commenced the counting of ballots, which is being closely monitored by party agents and observers.

2. Incidents of Violence:

In the Nyankpala constituency, a shooting incident claimed one life and left another injured. The Ghana Police Service has arrested four suspects—Majid Issah, Fodi Issiage Kamara, Yakubu Simalia, and Alhaji Bashiru Mohamed—in connection with the incident.

In the Okaikwei South constituency, confusion arose when individuals allegedly affiliated with the New Patriotic Party (NPP) were found in possession of suspected fake ballots.

3. Tensions in Obuasi East:

The NDC Communications Officer for the constituency reportedly assaulted two military officers following a confrontation at a polling station. Fully armed soldiers were said to have attempted to visit the polling center, further escalating the situation.

4. Electoral Malpractice:

Allegations of ballot stuffing and vote-buying have surfaced in various constituencies, leading to heightened tensions between the NPP and the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Arrests and Security:

The Ghana Police Service has been active in responding to these issues, arresting several individuals involved in electoral violations. These incidents highlight the need for continued vigilance to maintain the credibility of the electoral process.

The Electoral Commission has reiterated its commitment to ensuring a free and fair election, and all eyes are now on the final results as vote counting proceeds.
