Official: John Mahama Declared Winner of Ghana’s 2024 Presidential Election
Former President John Dramani Mahama has been declared the winner of Ghana’s 2024 presidential election, marking his return to power after defeating Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in a tightly contested race. The Electoral Commission (EC) announced Mahama’s victory on December 9, confirming he secured 6,328,397 votes (56.55%) against Bawumia’s 4,657,304 votes (41.61%).
The National Democratic Congress (NDC) also achieved a parliamentary majority, securing over 160 seats, which includes many constituencies previously held by the NPP. This victory strengthens Mahama’s political mandate as he prepares to take office on January 7, 2025.
The 2024 elections saw a voter turnout of 60.9%, with the process praised for its transparency, despite logistical challenges and isolated incidents of violence in constituencies such as Damongo and Ablekuma Central. International and local observers commended the EC for conducting a credible election under challenging circumstances.
Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, in a concession speech, urged his supporters to accept the outcome, emphasizing national unity and respect for the democratic process. Mahama is expected to address the nation, laying out his vision for the next four years as Ghana moves into a new political chapter.
