While no direct link has been confirmed, the attack occurs amid heightened tensions following Ghana’s 2024 general elections. In related incidents, the Electoral Commission’s office in Damongo was set ablaze by protesting youth over delayed election results. Owusu-Ekuful, a prominent member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), lost her parliamentary seat in the elections to Rev. Kweku Addo of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
In a broader context, the police have detained 89 individuals for election-related offenses, including vandalism and property destruction. The authorities have called for calm and emphasized the need for peace as the country transitions to a new administration.
