NPP Rejects Parliamentary Results for Tema Central, Citing Irregularities

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has officially rejected the parliamentary results for the Tema Central constituency announced by the Electoral Commission (EC) on December 9, 2024. The EC declared the National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate, Ebi Bright, as the winner with 18,539 votes, narrowly defeating the NPP’s Charles Forson, who secured 18,421 votes.

The collation of results, initially held at Chemu Senior High Technical School, was relocated to the Tema Regional Police Command after disagreements escalated, leading to police intervention, including the firing of teargas.

At the collation center, disputes arose over three contentious pink sheets out of the 148 used, which NPP officials insisted should be included, while NDC officials, led by South Dayi MP Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, rejected them due to a lack of endorsement by presiding officers.

Tensions heightened when NDC Deputy National Communication Officer Malik Basintale rallied supporters to storm the collation center, destroying property and demanding the declaration of Ebi Bright as the winner. The EC officials were subsequently escorted to safety by police.

Hours later, under pressure, the Tema West Municipal Election Officer, John Nunoo, announced Ebi Bright’s victory. However, Charles Forson condemned this declaration as illegal, arguing that Mr. Nunoo was not the designated returning officer for Tema Central. Forson accused the NDC of disrupting the process and vowed to challenge the results in court if an upcoming meeting with the EC does not resolve the issue.

The situation underscores heightened post-election tensions and calls into question the integrity of the process in the constituency. Authorities are expected to address the dispute to maintain public confidence in the electoral system.
