Tensions rise in Weija Gbawe as NDC demands result re-declaration

Tensions have escalated in the Weija-Gbawe Constituency as supporters of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) have surrounded the Electoral Commission’s (EC) premises, demanding a re-evaluation of the parliamentary election results. The unrest follows the declaration of Jerry Ahmed Shaib, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) candidate, as the winner of the parliamentary seat during the 2024 general elections.

Jerry Ahmed Shaib secured 32,608 votes, narrowly defeating the NDC’s Felix Odartey Lamptey, who garnered 30,460 votes. The NDC is contesting the declared results, citing alleged discrepancies in the figures that favored the NPP candidate.

Wilfred Ayitey Blankson, Presiding Member of the Weija Gbawe Municipal Assembly, expressed concerns about the situation, emphasizing the proximity of the Electoral Commission’s office to the assembly and warning of potential risks to property and public safety. He urged the EC to address the matter promptly to prevent further escalation.

“The situation is tense, with military and police personnel deployed, but the crowd continues to grow. We advocate for peace and justice, and we hope the issue is resolved swiftly to avoid any harm to the assembly or its properties,” Ayitey Blankson stated in an interview.
