We’ll work with you to create brighter future for fishing industry – GNCFC tells Mahama

The Ghana National Canoe Fishermen Council (GNCFC), Southern Volta Marine, has extended its congratulations to John Mahama on his election as Ghana’s President-elect. Representing canoe fishermen in the Southern Volta Marine region, the Council pledged to work closely with the incoming administration to strengthen the fishing industry and improve the livelihoods of fishing communities.

In a statement issued on December 12, the GNCFC commended Mr. Mahama’s victory, describing it as a promising step for Ghana’s coastal communities. They expressed optimism about collaborating with his government to implement sustainable fishing practices, address pressing challenges in the sector, and enhance the well-being of artisanal fishermen.

The Council highlighted several key concerns facing the fishing industry, including dwindling fish stocks, competition from industrial trawlers, and inadequate infrastructure. They expressed confidence in the President-elect’s ability to lead initiatives aimed at protecting marine resources, boosting the economy of fishing communities, and improving access to markets and education on sustainable practices.

“We are optimistic that your leadership will tackle these issues and pave the way for a brighter future for our members and the entire fishing industry,” the statement read.

The GNCFC concluded by wishing Mr. Mahama wisdom and success in his leadership role and reiterated their readiness to support his administration’s efforts in advancing the fishing sector.
