PMMC Condemns Interference in Bullion Operations at National Assay Centre
The Precious Minerals Marketing Company (PMMC) has accused National Democratic Congress (NDC) National Organizer, Joseph Yamin, and others of attempting to seize bullion bars belonging to the Bank of Ghana (BoG). The incident occurred on Tuesday, December 17, 2024, at the National Assay Centre located at the Aviance Cargo Terminal in Accra.
According to a PMMC statement issued on December 18, the bullion bars were part of the BoG’s Domestic Gold Purchase Programme (DGPP), designed to strengthen Ghana’s gold reserves. The disruption led to a standoff, resolved after police intervened and moved the bullion to the Greater Accra Regional Police Command for safekeeping.
The PMMC labeled the interference as unlawful, warning that such actions undermine international confidence in Ghana’s gold trade and harm its global reputation. They called for all stakeholders to act responsibly to safeguard the country’s economic interests.
A licensed private gold exporter was also affected during the incident, as the gold in their possession was being processed for export. The PMMC emphasized that the disruption unnecessarily delayed lawful operations and created undue tension.
The company urged calm and adherence to legal protocols, stressing the importance of maintaining Ghana’s standing as a trusted player in the international bullion market.
