We’ll use alternative verification for Ablekuma North results – EC
The Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana has reassured the public that alternative verification methods will be used to resolve the disputed parliamentary election results in the Ablekuma North Constituency, following the destruction of electoral materials in a fire.
The blaze, which occurred at the Kwashieman Cluster of Schools on Tuesday, December 17, 2024, destroyed key election materials, including ballot papers and pink sheets, stored at the facility. Despite this setback, the EC has emphasized that the integrity of the electoral process remains intact.
Speaking at an event organized by the Ghana Center for Democratic Development (CDD) on Wednesday, December 18, 2024, Dr. Serebour Quaicoe, Director for Training at the EC, outlined that alternative forms of results documentation are available for verification and collation.
“The ballot boxes have been burnt, but we have results in other forms. So once we can gather the results from other forms and ensure their completeness, we can proceed with collation,” Dr. Quaicoe stated.
He further cautioned against allowing technicalities or disruptions to undermine the electoral process.
“If that is the decision of the voter, it should be upheld. We must do everything to preserve the decision of the voter and not allow actions that truncate the process,” he added.
The Ablekuma North Constituency race has been one of the most contentious contests in the December 7 elections, with both the NPP’s Nana Akua Owusu Afriyie and the NDC’s Ewurabena Aubynn claiming victory. The Electoral Commission’s initial declaration of victory for the NDC was reversed, prompting plans for a re-collation of results.
The EC’s assurance highlights its commitment to upholding voter decisions, even amidst logistical challenges, as it works to resolve the disputes in the constituency.
