Ghana to Boost Natural Gas Supply as ENI Shuts Wells for Upgrade — Minister Jinapor Confirms

The Minister of Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor, has announced a major upgrade in Ghana’s natural gas production, set to take effect this Sunday, July 13, 2025.
Speaking to the Daily Graphic in Accra, Mr Jinapor revealed that ENI Ghana, the country’s key gas producer, will temporarily shut down its non-associated gas wells for essential engineering works aimed at increasing gas supply. The brief shutdown, expected to last no more than six hours, will enable ENI to ramp up production from the current 240 million standard cubic feet per day (MMscf) to 270 MMscf.
Describing the move as a “strategic intervention,” Mr Jinapor said the upgrade will significantly boost the country’s long-term energy reliability.
“This Sunday, July 13, ENI will turn off its valves temporarily to increase gas production to about 270 MMscf. It means we are stabilising the energy sector,” he explained.
The minister acknowledged that the maintenance operation could cause some power supply interruptions but stressed it was necessary for future energy stability.
Mitigation Measures in Place
Mr Jinapor added that although the shutdown could cause a temporary power shortfall of about 600 megawatts, the operation was scheduled for Sunday, a period of lower national power demand, to limit disruptions.
He assured that the Energy Ministry, together with power sector stakeholders, had put in place adequate measures to manage the expected deficit, minimising its impact on consumers.
Additionally, the government decided against running thermal plants on liquid fuel during the brief gas supply suspension. Mr Jinapor explained that converting the thermal plants for such a short operation would require complicated technical adjustments, such as changing fuel nozzles, which was deemed inefficient.
“Based on the advice from engineers, I have directed that we do not attempt to run those plants on liquid fuel for that short period. It involves changing nozzles and a lot of work,” he said.
Public Assurance
The Energy Minister urged Ghanaians to cooperate with the government as it undertakes this critical upgrade to secure Ghana’s energy future.
“We are doing everything possible to minimise the impact. We ask for the understanding of the public as we take this necessary step,” he added.
The gas production upgrade forms part of Ghana’s broader efforts to enhance energy security and reduce reliance on imported fuel for power generation.
