Fisherman Sentenced to 40 Years for Rape and Robbery in Accra
Emmanuel Tetteh, a fisherman popularly known as “666” or “Escoba,” has been sentenced to 40 years imprisonment for raping and robbing a woman at Banana Inn, Accra, in the presence of her two young daughters.
Tetteh, who pleaded not guilty to the charges of robbery, was found guilty by an Accra Circuit Court presided over by Judge Isaac Addo. The court deemed his actions premeditated and cited his criminal history as grounds for a severe sentence.
A Pattern of Crime
Tetteh, who is already serving a six-year sentence for theft, was arrested after a mobile phone he had stolen and sold was traced using its tracking device. The judge noted that Tetteh committed this crime while another case against him was pending in a separate court.
Details of the Crime
The incident occurred on June 23, 2022, when the complainant, who resides in Banana Inn, woke up in the middle of the night to find Tetteh in her home. Armed with a knife, Tetteh threatened her, stole her Samsung Galaxy A12 phone and GH¢2,090 in cash, and then raped her after assaulting her. Her daughters, aged three and five, witnessed the ordeal.
Tetteh fled the scene but was later apprehended and identified by the victim during an identification parade on July 15, 2024.
Judgment and Sentencing
The court emphasized the premeditated nature of the crime and Tetteh’s pattern of criminal behavior. Judge Isaac Addo remarked that such individuals pose a significant threat to society and must be kept away for an extended period.
Chief Inspector Jonas Lawer, the lead prosecutor, supported the severe sentencing, highlighting Tetteh’s criminal history and the trauma inflicted on the victim and her family.
