Frank Annoh-Dompreh Declared Winner of Nsawam Adoagyiri Seat After Recount
Frank Annoh-Dompreh of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has been confirmed as the Member of Parliament for Nsawam Adoagyiri following a recount ordered by the High Court.
Final Results
Annoh-Dompreh secured 29,640 votes, narrowly defeating Amenorpe Philbert Fummey of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), who polled 29,433 votes.
Court’s Decision
The recount stemmed from a December 20 ruling by the High Court, which mandated the Electoral Commission (EC) to re-collate results in Nsawam Adoagyiri and Ablekuma North constituencies. This ruling nullified earlier results and followed a petition by six NPP parliamentary candidates who alleged irregularities during the initial collation process.
The constituencies affected by the petition included Tema Central, Nsawam Adoagyiri, Okaikwei Central, Techiman South, Ablekuma North, and Ahafo Ano North.
Election-Day Disruptions
The electoral process in Nsawam Adoagyiri was fraught with tension, with disruptions at the collation centre halting progress on election day. Attempts to resume collation on December 13 failed, prompting the EC to relocate collation activities to the Police Training School. Similar unrest was reported in other constituencies, exacerbating tensions.
NDC’s Reaction
The NDC has strongly opposed the re-collation, arguing that the results declared at polling stations should stand. They believe the EC’s decision to nullify the initial results has deepened electoral tensions.
Next Steps
As the EC works to finalize results in other contentious constituencies, heightened security remains in place to ensure a smooth process and maintain order. The outcome of this legal intervention underscores the critical role of judicial oversight in resolving electoral disputes.
