Ghana is set to host a historic presidential inauguration at the iconic Black Star Square in Accra, marking another milestone in the nation’s democratic journey. The event will feature high-profile attendees, significant security measures, and a carefully curated schedule to ensure its success.

High-Level Delegations

Felix Kwakye Ofosu, spokesperson for the Mahama Transition Team, confirmed that the ceremony will welcome ten heads of state, including Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Kenyan President William Ruto. Additionally, two vice presidents, a speaker of parliament, and representatives from international bodies such as the Commonwealth and the African Development Bank (AfDB) will grace the occasion.

Delegations from the European Union, the United States, and the United Kingdom have also confirmed their participation, emphasizing the global significance of the event.

Security and Preparations

The Black Star Square, temporarily serving as the parliamentary chamber for the swearing-in, is undergoing extensive preparations. The Ministry of National Security has announced strict access protocols, with entry limited to invited guests holding valid invitation cards.

To enhance security, a ban on private drones—recreational or commercial—has been imposed in the vicinity. Acting Chief Director Lily Fati Soale emphasized the importance of this measure to ensure the safety of dignitaries and attendees.

Schedule and Protocols

The inauguration is scheduled to begin at 8:30 a.m., with formal proceedings kicking off at 11:00 a.m. Members of Parliament and dignitaries are expected to arrive before the Speaker of Parliament, who will escort the President-elect and Vice-President-elect to the swearing-in area.

Mr. Kwakye Ofosu reiterated the importance of adhering to protocols to maintain the dignity of the occasion.

Traffic Diversions and Parking Arrangements

To facilitate smooth operations, key roads around the Black Star Square will be temporarily closed. Affected roads include:

  • 28th February Road: From CEPS Headquarters to Castle Road Junction.
  • Castle Road: From AU Circle to Osu Cemetery Traffic Light.
  • Starlet 91 Road: Adjacent to the Black Star Square.

Traffic from La, Labone, and Osu will be redirected to Salem Avenue and Oxford Street. Designated parking areas include the back of the Independence Arch, the State House forecourt, Access Bank car park, and specified lots within the Ministries Area. Unauthorized parking and passage through roadblocks will be prohibited.

A Testament to Democracy

This inauguration symbolizes Ghana’s commitment to democracy and peaceful transitions of power. With meticulous planning and robust security arrangements, the event is poised to leave a lasting impression on both local and international observers.
