The Conference of Heads of Assisted Senior High Schools (CHASS) has appealed to parents and guardians to step in and help address the ongoing food supply challenges in senior high schools.
Five days into the new term, Primus Baro, the National Secretary of CHASS, described the situation as critical, with schools resorting to food rationing to manage dwindling supplies.
Meanwhile, Thomas Awuah, President of the National Food Suppliers Association of Ghana, speaking on Adom FM’s Burning Issues, expressed readiness to provide food to the schools. However, he emphasized the need for the government to issue proper contract documents to facilitate this.
“While some arrears from the previous government remain unpaid, we are prepared to supply food once the necessary contracts are finalized,” Awuah stated.
He further noted that despite past financial constraints, food suppliers have consistently ensured students receive meals without imposing undue pressure. “We have never denied students food, nor have we pressured anyone. The current situation is difficult to comprehend,” he added.
Awuah urged the government to convene a stakeholder meeting to thoroughly address the issue, suggesting that a lack of clarity may be at the root of the crisis.
“I believe the government needs to engage stakeholders to better understand the problem. The ongoing challenges point to a lack of proper dialogue and understanding,” he remarked.
