Ibrahim Adjei backs government’s decision to overhaul Ghana School Feeding Programme

Ibrahim Adjei, a former Assistant Secretary at the Office of Former President Nana Akufo-Addo, has thrown his full support behind the government’s sweeping reforms of the Ghana School Feeding Programme (GSFP).

Speaking on Channel One TV’s Breakfast Daily on Monday, May 5, Adjei defended the controversial move to terminate all existing contracts with caterers under the programme, describing it as a necessary step to fix deep-rooted inefficiencies.

The GSFP Secretariat, in a statement dated May 2, 2025, announced the immediate cancellation of contracts for all caterers nationwide. It also instructed that no meals should be served for the third term of the 2024/2025 academic year. However, it assured the affected caterers that payments for services rendered in the previous term would be honored.

Commenting on the decision, Adjei emphasized that the restructuring was vital to address persistent issues such as the misuse of the programme by some school authorities.

“So with the restructuring, I am totally in support of it. The NPP did it in terms of how we can cure the human propensity to go outside of the law. Laws are in place, but people go out of the law to do things for their gain,” he noted.

The former presidential staffer added that the reforms offer a chance to realign the programme with its original mission—to provide nutritious meals to schoolchildren while supporting local agriculture and creating jobs.
