Deadly Clash Between Illegal Miners and Military at AngloGold Ashanti Mine

AngloGold Ashanti Ghana has confirmed a violent confrontation between illegal miners and military personnel at its Obuasi concession on January 18, 2025. The clash, which occurred in the secured northern section of the mine in Obuasi, Ashanti Region, resulted in the deaths of seven illegal miners, with several others injured, including a member of the public security forces.

In a statement released on January 19, AngloGold Ashanti revealed that a large group of armed illegal miners attempted to breach the mine’s infrastructure, prompting authorities to intervene to secure the facility and ensure safety. Four vehicles were set ablaze during the incident, further escalating tensions.

“The situation at the mine is currently calm, and the company is working closely with the authorities. Our primary concern is the safety and health of all our employees and those in our community who have been directly impacted by this incident,” the statement read.

The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) explained that soldiers acted in self-defence after the illegal miners opened fire on them.

The government has ordered a full investigation into the incident and directed AngloGold Ashanti to cover the medical expenses of the injured. Meanwhile, Obuasi West MP Kwaku Kwarteng has called for an immediate probe to ensure accountability and prevent future clashes.

AngloGold Ashanti has assured the public of its commitment to safeguarding its operations and collaborating with stakeholders to maintain peace in the affected areas.
