Accra, January 24, 2025 – President John Dramani Mahama has appointed Rev. Ing. Edmund Yirenkyi Fianko as the Acting Director-General of the National Communications Authority (NCA).
The announcement, shared on the NCA’s official Facebook page, comes in the wake of the resignation of Joe Anokye earlier this month. Mr. Anokye, who served under the New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration, stepped down amidst speculation about his next career steps.
Rev. Fianko assumes leadership at a critical time for Ghana’s telecommunications sector, which has seen rapid advancements such as the rollout of 4G and 5G networks and growing consumer demands for improved services. His appointment presents an opportunity to build on his predecessors’ accomplishments while tackling emerging challenges in the sector.
Priorities for the New Acting Director-General
As the head of Ghana’s telecommunications regulatory body, Rev. Fianko’s responsibilities will include:
- Strengthening Regulatory Frameworks: Ensuring policies keep pace with technological advancements.
- Fostering Innovation: Supporting initiatives to expand access and improve service quality.
- Data Protection and Cybersecurity: Addressing concerns in an increasingly digitized economy.
- Equitable Spectrum Allocation: Managing the fair distribution of resources among industry players to promote healthy competition.
The NCA’s role as a key enabler of Ghana’s digital ecosystem remains pivotal in driving the nation’s global competitiveness. Rev. Fianko’s tenure will likely focus on balancing regulatory oversight with the industry’s growth aspirations, ensuring Ghana’s telecommunications infrastructure remains robust and inclusive.
His leadership marks a new chapter for the NCA as the country navigates the next phase of its digital transformation.
