President Mahama Establishes National Economic Dialogue Planning Committee

As part of his 120-day Social Contract with Ghanaians, President John Dramani Mahama has established a seven-member National Economic Dialogue (NED) Planning Committee. The initiative is aimed at addressing Ghana’s economic challenges and charting a path toward sustainable growth and resilience.

Committee Members and Leadership

The committee is chaired by eminent economist Dr. Ishmael Yamson and includes six other distinguished members:

  • Dr. K.Y. Amoako
  • Professor John Gatsi
  • Mohammed Samara
  • Nelly Mireku
  • Anthony Sarpong
  • Ernest De-Graft Egyir

The team has been tasked with organizing a high-level dialogue within four weeks and submitting a comprehensive report to the President.

Objectives of the National Economic Dialogue

According to a statement from Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Acting Spokesperson to the President, the NED aims to:

  1. Communicate the true state of Ghana’s economy to stakeholders and citizens.
  2. Provide a platform for consultation on the country’s pressing economic and developmental challenges.
  3. Discuss policy trade-offs and foster consensus on reforms to create a high-growth, inclusive, and resilient economy.

Strategic Focus

The NED will prioritize the development of a homegrown fiscal consolidation program to guide the national budget. Additionally, it will identify structural reforms and key policy priorities needed to reset and transform Ghana’s economy.

Significance of the Dialogue

The National Economic Dialogue is a critical component of President Mahama’s strategy to tackle fiscal sustainability, address structural inefficiencies, and ensure the economy is resilient to shocks. By engaging experts and stakeholders, the initiative seeks to generate actionable insights to inform policy-making and lay a solid foundation for long-term economic development.

This effort underscores the administration’s commitment to fostering transparency, inclusivity, and accountability in economic governance.
